Overview

The predefined options automatically added to the SOCKShell context menu at installation time include the following:

Analyse Pascal source code

This option analyses all the selected files that match the file extensions configured on the preference page as if they were Pascal source files, and produces a report of various statistics. Only files that match the configured extensions are processed, so it is possible to select all the files in a folder and let SOCKShell choose which files to process. If folders are part of the highlighted selection then all files in those folders and all their subfolders are included in the analysis.

The analysis report includes the total number of characters, lines, blank lines, code lines, comment lines, classes, functions and procedures.

This information is automatically copied to the Windows Clipboard in a variety of formats, allowing you to paste it directly into another application or document such as a spreadsheet, word processing document or a presentation.

Explore in a new Window

This option runs a new copy of Windows Explorer in a new window and automatically selects the file or folder whose context menu is being displayed.

Copy the full path to the Clipboard

This option copies the full Windows paths of each of the file(s) and folder(s) whose context menu is being displayed to the Windows Clipboard ready for pasting into other windows. If more than one path is copied then each path is separated by a Carriage Return and a Line Feed.

The list of paths in the Clipboard can then be pasted into any program window by selecting the Paste option on its Edit menu.

Edit with Notepad

This option runs Windows Notepad and edits the file whose context menu is being displayed, or a new document in the selected folder if the context menu is for a folder.

This is particularly useful when you want to take a quick look at the contents of a document without having to run its associated application.

Edit with Wordpad

This option runs Windows Wordpad and edits the file whose context menu is being displayed, or a new document in the selected folder if the context menu is for a folder.

This is particularly useful when you want to take a quick look at the contents of a document without having to run its associated application. In addition, Wordpad is able to load documents and files of almost any size, whereas Notepad is limited in the size of files that it can edit.

Open a Command Prompt

This option opens a Windows Command Prompt (i.e. a DOS prompt) in the folder, or the folder containing the file, whose context menu is being displayed.

This is particularly useful when typing a simple DOS command would be quicker and easier than wading through multiple dialogs and menus to perform an operation.

Set file attributes

This option displays a dialog that enables you to set or clear the operating system attributes of the selected file(s) or folder(s), and optionally of the contents of all subfolders.

This is particularly useful when you have copied a number of files from a CD and wish to remove the Read Only attribute, or have backed up the files and wish to clear the Archive attribute.

Set file date and time

This option displays a dialog that enables you to set the created, last updated and last accessed date and time of the selected file(s) or folder(s), and optionally of the contents of all subfolders.

This is particularly useful when you are copying or distributing a number of files and wish to set all of their dates and times to the same value, such as a release date.

Create a folder

This option creates a new folder named 'New Folder' in the same folder as the file or folder whose context menu is being displayed.

This is particularly useful when you need to create a new folder and the standard Windows 'New' submenu takes forever to display because of all the special types that are on it.

SOCKShell preferences

This option displays the preference pages that enable you to configure the operation of SOCKShell and its additions to the Windows Explorer context menu. The preference pages can also be displayed by selecting the appropriate option on the SOCKShell submenu on the Programs submenu of the Start menu.
